Westbury Street St Kilda East, Melbourne, Victoria

Evoking the béton brut of the Plumbers & Gasfitters Union Building (Gunn & Hayball 1970), the raw concrete finish of this boutique apartment development is a signature use of the material.

The building’s confident façade expresses materials in their raw form. Contrasting rough sawn timber and off-form concrete with highly finished glass and aluminium, the sculpted upper levels provide a dramatic cantilever towards the street.

Taking its lead from the architecture, a sophisticated approach with industrial undertones was conceived for the interior design. An accent on light, views and space underpins the inside/outside concept. Glazed light fills the stair and lift lobbies, and there are large landscaped courtyards at ground level.
