Coburg Collective Coburg, VIC

Coburg Collective is a vibrant mixed-use development located in the heart of Melbourne’s inner north. Comprising 158 apartments in the main building as well as 12 townhouses fronting Cash St, and a significant commercial and retail offering, the eight-level development also provides a range of resident facilities such as an indoor pool, gym, bar & dining area as well as amenities to benefit the local community including a new urban plaza and public laneway.

Located right on Sydney road, in proximity to Melbourne’s CBD and close to the Upfield train line and bike path, Coburg Collective offers residents a built-in buzz on their doorstep. A range of residences with generous outdoor areas provide a development that has been designed to provide high quality solar penetration and natural ventilation.

A lack of public open space and amenity in the area prompted us to introduce and maximise high levels of green space to both the public and private realm. Additional to the pedestrian through link to Sydney Road, we have introduced a public pocket park, landscaped yards and setbacks to residential entries as well as a rooftop terrace and micro gardens to the upper floors.

Coburg Collective’s architecture is bold, retaining the essence of Coburg’s historic heart by establishing a new kind of opulence that rejoices in the robust and restrained. Edgy architecture presents dramatic forms uniquely connected to motifs found in the surrounding streetscape. The Sydney Road façade is highly articulated, presenting a distinct character to the street and entrance to the new public realm, while a layering of textured surfaces creates a solid anchor to the wider urban context.

Internally, a neutral, restrained palette creates a canvas for individual expression with raw, organic materiality incorporated alongside refined detailing, creating a dynamic contrast utilising a sophisticated approach to industrial elements and an interplay of scale and texture through uncomplicated geometry.
The Sydney Road façade is designed to be highly articulated, presenting a distinct character to the street and entrance to the public realm, while the street wall offers a mix of textured concrete and glass with planter boxes, dramatic metal-profile shopfront canopies, and glazing systems. The
street wall above, primarily composed of brick is punctuated by alternating openings of infill steel fin balustrades, flush glazing and open voids, offering glimpses to the courtyard gardens beyond.

The Cash Street Townhouses draw on the local vernacular housing stock to provide a contemporary design response to the surrounding context including the use of undulating roof profiles and articulated brick front fences.
