Bayside Residence shortlisted in Houses Awards

10 May 2017

Authored by Hayball

Hayball’s design for a private residential addition in bayside Melbourne has been shortlisted in the 2017 Houses Awards. A flexible ‘forever’ home for three generations, the highly crafted addition sympathetically integrates with an existing Edwardian residence.

Revealing little of its internal spaces to the street, the Bayside Residence project provides a backdrop for the celebration of contemporary family and social life. Hidden from the street, a new entrance leads directly into the warm heart of the robust informal spaces, distinguished from the formal dignity of the restored heritage-style interiors of the original residence.

Beyond accommodating the daily hustle and bustle of a busy family with teenage children as they grow, two major drivers underpinned the brief:

The first was to acknowledge the importance of food and family and provide a changeable home that the children had no reason to leave. It was to create an intimate yet relaxed setting for celebrations and meals involving family both immediate and extended, as well as invited friends.

The second was craftsmanship – expressing our client’s family involvement in the construction industry and a desire to return to intensive skills of making that are rare in today’s highly mass produced and manufactured market. This lead to the use of slow, heavy, textured and crafted construction techniques such as in situ concrete with timber formwork and dry stacked stone walls.

The project is one of 23 shortlisted in the category House Alteration and Addition Over 200 m2. Winners and commendations will be announced on Friday 4 August at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
